My name is Jean Clermont. I am Canadian by birth, and owner and founder of Stickman Dialysis Industries, my company which I started in 1989 when I was 21 and diagnosed with ESRD (End Stage Renal Disease). At the time I was farming, operating a small beachwear company and racing formula cars in Canada, England, and the United States.
As friends my age were going off to college, I was learning about peritoneal dialysis and how to perform my own dialysis at home while tending to our Ontario farm with my mother. This modality of treatment was a new frontier and certainly not as popular as in-center hemodialysis at the time.
With a lot of new things to learn I reflected on how much of this process was uncomfortable, inconvenient, and just plain difficult. I was not one to complain, and have always been an inventor, so I built my own dialysis solution warmer to heat my solutions so I could travel to racetracks across Canada, the US, and England. I sought the help of my mentor Camille Grenier a genius creator and owner of (get this) a prestigous bra factory in Canada. Comedian and jovial inventor himself guided me through the hurdles of sewing and designing while inspiring me to move on.
As time passed new and greater ideas kept coming to mind. “How can I make this easier?” All my products came from knowing what I did not want or desire. I just kept envisioning an easier softer way for me and others to thrive on peritoneal dialysis.
Soon patients were calling me with requests for solutions to problems, and on two occasions I was asked to consult with large biomed companies on new kidney-related devices.
The products kept coming, sales grew, Stickman Dialysis Industries flourished, and in 2010 I moved to Arundel Maine on an E1 Visa and officially moved my company here. America is where most of our customers and suppliers were located and has since proven to be perfect choice. Besides, America is where I dreamed of living since summer camp in Vermont and weeks at the beach in Maine with my family.
In 2015 we built our own facility on in Arundel Maine and another in 2025. We have a dynamic team of people who recognize in importance of the products they handle, inspect and make. We have over 15 products with variations on our online store front and ship to all 50 States and 80 Countries worldwide.
As the world went inside and stayed home when Covid-19 hit, so did a lot of newer patients on dialysis. It was the easiest choice for those people that it suited. Better outcomes with less chance of being exposed by the virus, today more than ever home dialysis is becoming more prevalent in the United States.
Our company will continue to be part of the process to assist each new dialysis patient with the proper tools to thrive with performing this life saving course of treatment.
As a dialysis patient I just wanted to normalize my life a little. To be able to travel and still have warm solutions. To be able to take a shower without worry of this new catheter I had to babysit. To store this transfer set safely with little or no tape to remove day in day out around the most sensitive area that is now functioning as the kidneys as well. And of course to get a good night sleep, and not have to clean up after disposing of effluent because the tubing popped out of the toilet.
